Biography

Early life

Chen Dao was born in the 2nd century CE in Runan, Yu Province (present-day Pingyu County, Henan).

His courtesy name was Shuzhi.

Service under Liu Bei

Chen Dao joined Liu Bei’s forces when Liu Bei served as Inspector and later Governor of Yu Province.

In 194 CE, the first year of Xingping, Tao Qian, Governor of Xu Province, recommended Liu Bei as Inspector of Yu Province and had him station troops at Xiaopei.

Two years later, Liu Bei submitted to Cao Cao, and Cao Cao made Liu Bei Governor of Yu Province.

Later, when Liu Bei’s involvement in the Girdle Edict was exposed, he was defeated by Cao Cao and fled to Yuan Shao.

During Liu Bei’s tenure as Inspector and Governor of Yu Province, Chen Dao joined Liu Bei’s forces.

Commander of White Feather Troops

Chen Dao commanded Liu Bei’s elite bodyguard unit, the White Feather (白毦) troops, also known as White Ear troops.

His rank was often second only to Zhao Yun, the famous Shu Han general.

Both Chen Dao and Zhao Yun were known for their loyalty and bravery.

Service after Liu Bei’s death

After Liu Bei died, Chen Dao continued to command the White Feather troops.

During the Jianxing era, Chen Dao served as Protector of the Army and General Who Conquers the West and was enfeoffed as Marquis of a Village.

Commander of Yong’an

In 226 CE, the fourth year of Jianxing, Zhuge Liang prepared for the Northern Expeditions and wanted to move the army to Hanzhong.

He therefore had Li Yan, who was stationed at Yong’an, move to Jiangzhou.

He left Protector of the Army Chen Dao to guard Yong’an.

Chen Dao was appointed Commander of Yong’an and stationed in Badong Commandery, under Li Yan’s command.

Zhuge Liang’s praise

Zhuge Liang once wrote a letter to Zhuge Jin (or possibly Li Yan), saying: “Brother, you dislike that the Yong’an garrison is not elite and strong. What Chen Dao commands are the White Feather troops from the late emperor’s tent. The White Feather troops are the finest troops of the west. If you dislike that the White Feather troops are few, I should send back some Jiangzhou troops to add benefit to guarding Yong’an.”

This showed Zhuge Liang’s high regard for Chen Dao and the White Feather troops.

Death

Chen Dao died while serving as Commander of Yong’an.

Zong Yu succeeded him in the position.

The exact date of Chen Dao’s death is unclear.

According to the Huayang Guozhi, Chen Dao died while serving as Commander of Yong’an, and Zong Yu succeeded him.

According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Zong Yu succeeded as Commander of Yong’an in 247 CE, the tenth year of Yanxi.

If Zong Yu succeeded immediately after Chen Dao’s death, Chen Dao may have died in that year.

However, according to the Huayang Guozhi, Chen Dao was already General Who Conquers the West in 226 CE, the fourth year of Jianxing.

In 230 CE, the eighth year of Jianxing, Jiang Wei was appointed General Who Conquers the West.

If Chen Dao died while in office, he should have died before Jiang Wei succeeded to the position.

Therefore, there is controversy about the exact year of Chen Dao’s death.
